Putnam County has a rich musical tradition. Live public performances have been occurring here since 1875, thanks to establishment of the former Opera House on the square in Greencastle. DePauw University’s School of Music has brought leading musicians to the community for generations. And, of course, Putnam County has produced its share of local-grown artists, many of whom are featured in our exhibit.

Artifacts on display include a radio from the 1930s, a songbook used in local schools in the ‘20s, guitars, album covers, photographs and posters of local garage bands, and more.

Youngsters can make their own music with an interactive exhibit featuring a chord organ, washtub base, dulcimer, washboard, and more.

Also included are copies of “Putnam County Prime Cuts,” a CD of Putnam County music that is available to visitors for a $20 donation. The CD includes more than 20 songs written and/or performed by Putnam County musicians ranging from Don VonTress (“Achy Breaky Heart”), Tad Robinson and Jimmy Ibbotson (Nitty Gritty Dirt Band) to the Four Freshmen and DePauw University faculty.
